To make matters worse, the $1.5 million was awarded from the agency run by Hertel’s wife, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. And the organization’s CEO admitted to discussing the contract with Hertel while he was negotiating with the State for the $1.5 million grant. To recap… As Gov. Whitmer’s top lobbyist, Hertel steered a $1.5 million grant from the $31 billion budget controlled by his wife, while negotiating a $108,000 contract for himself. On Friday, June 30, 2023, the funding was announced and that same day, Hertel resigned his government position.
