Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday forcefully rejected calls for a cease-fire as “calls for Israel to surrender to Hamas, to surrender to terrorism,” telling reporters that Israel was “fighting the enemies of civilization itself.” And, as the NYT reports

, apparent advance toward Gaza City was heightening fears among those who remained in the enclave’s largest city.

Israeli Hostage Freed

Israel announced on Monday that a soldier abducted by Hamas earlier this month had been rescued from the Gaza Strip in an overnight operation, the first captive taken in the terror group’s shock assault on October 7 to be freed by Israeli troops, as The Jerusalem Post reports
