Here are some updates from today.
* In Arizona, a right-wing legal group filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit seeking to ban the use of ballot drop boxes. The plaintiffs are challenging a part of the 2023 Elections Procedure Manual ([link removed]) — which has not yet been signed by Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) and Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) and therefore has not been implemented.
* Kenneth Chesebro, who served as an attorney for former President Donald Trump in his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, pleaded ([link removed]) guilty to a felony count of conspiracy to file false documents as part of an agreement with Fulton County, Georgia prosecutors.
+ Just yesterday, another former Trump lawyer, Sidney Powell, pleaded ([link removed]) guilty to six misdemeanor charges. Chesebro and Powell were originally scheduled to go to trial together on Monday.
* In Louisiana, a federal district court scheduled ([link removed]) a hearing for Feb. 5-9 on a new, fair congressional map for 2024. The hearing was originally scheduled for Oct. 3-5, but Republicans delayed the process.
* After 17 days and 3 votes, there is still no Speaker of the House. Though Jim Jordan has failed to secure the speakership, his nomination is a sign of the Republican Party’s ill-health ([link removed]) and its embrace of the far-right post-Trump.
* A series of recent audits and investigations across three states have revealed ([link removed]) close to a thousand polling places that are non-compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act or are otherwise inaccessible to voters with disabilities.
* The federal trial against Texas’ anti-voter law Senate Bill 1 concluded ([link removed]) after nearly six weeks of testimony from dozens of witnesses. Closing arguments are set for Jan. 12. The judge will issue his final ruling at a future date.
