medicine.

Examining the Role of Hospital Equity Officers

In the October 2023 issue on Tackling Structural Racism in Health, Joel
Weissman and coauthors examined how hospital equity officers around the
country are addressing structural racism and other determinants of
health care disparities
.

The authors find that about half of equity officers surveyed reported
experiencing "at least some obstacles to achieving their health equity
objectives," including racist beliefs among health care industry workers
and a lack of staff diversity.

While the study's survey results indicate that hospitals are working
to address these obstacles, they acknowledge that issues of racism
extend beyond the health care system.
