Examining the Role of Hospital Equity Officers
In the October 2023 issue on Tackling Structural Racism in Health, Joel Weissman and coauthors examined how hospital equity officers around the country are addressing structural racism and other determinants of health care disparities.

The authors find that about half of equity officers surveyed reported experiencing "at least some obstacles to achieving their health equity objectives," including racist beliefs among health care industry workers and a lack of staff diversity.

While the study’s survey results indicate that hospitals are working to address these obstacles, they acknowledge that issues of racism extend beyond the health care system.
