The Biden administration recently announced it’s going to put the power of the full federal government into fighting climate change through a government-wide social cost of carbon directive.

Fossil fuel does about $700 billion in harm every year to the United States, and they’ve gotten away with it for free – until now. The administration’s new directive will factor the true costs of carbon pollution into a variety of government actions – whether that’s purchasing, regulations, or permitting. This will make a big difference in reducing emissions and will cut back on the bills that American taxpayers have to pay for climate-related disasters and other costs triggered by climate change.

It’s undeniable: Democrats are getting things done on climate.

This is a big deal, team, and it’s one I’ve been pushing for for many years now, so I’m heartened by the administration’s decision. After a summer of extreme weather events that shattered records, there’s still more to be done to find a pathway to climate safety.
