Like Nida, I’m a Muslim organizer and mother. I’m also queer and Black. You don’t see lots of people like me and Nida in office, but in a political climate with increasing hate, I believe we need local elected officials who know what their communities are going through and are ready to stand up for our communities.

Growing up like I did, in a working-class family, I learned quickly that building real community starts with organizing. And when you organize WITH your community, you can take on anyone who threatens it.

Here in North Carolina, those threats keep coming every day: against LGBTQ+ rights, abortion access, and our Black and Brown communities.

These attacks make it clearer than ever that we need progressives like me and Nida in office, who are ready to fight TOGETHER against the attacks determined to take us backwards.
