Dear John
This week we have launched our new report, “_Vanishing Icons: How
population growth is driving our most loved animals to extinction_”.
You can read my blog outlining its findings here [3] and find the fully
referenced 20-page report here [4].
The report features six case studies, looking at the plight of tigers,
mountain lions, elephants, orcas, chimpanzees, and hedgehogs. We chose
these animals to demonstrate how even the most resilient, adaptive, and
intelligent creatures are subject to tremendous pressure from human
population growth – especially, but not only, in degrading and destroying
their habitats. All six have been listed as endangered on the IUCN red
list.
We’ve been campaigning on behalf of all wildlife – including insects
[5], the least loved and celebrated – for a long time, and sharing the
good news that protecting them through addressing our population is good
for people as well as animals. We’ll be sending this report to
governments, the media and organisations working in conservation. Sadly, we
know many of them don’t want to listen, but our job is to put the
incontrovertible evidence in front of them. We’d love your support in
sharing this report as widely as you can.
I learned a lot writing this report, and a lot of it was sobering. It’s
too late for many animals, and shocking that animals as widely loved as
these six still face the threat of extinction. But it is not too
late.
Read the report [4]
Thank you, as always, for your support for what we do, and we’d love to
get your feedback on the report.
Best wishes
Madeleine
