Republican lawmakers are ready to stop being the center of attention, for once. House Speaker drama continues, with reactions from Republican lawmakers at odds with the (cess)pool of candidates vying for the party’s nomination.
* Republicans’ opinions of Republicans have been mostly negative. ([link removed]) Florida Governor Ron DeSantis questioned whether chaos “ever led to any results.” Former Vice President and Mother Lover Mike Pence said he was “deeply disappointed” in the actions of the handful of Republicans who aligned with Democrats to oust McCarthy and added that “chaos is never America’s friend.” Why does he sound like he’s hosting a children’s show?

* Not everyone is mad at Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his merry band of far right shit-stirrers, though. Fully on the side of chaos was presidential hopeful MC Vivek Ramaswamy. ([link removed]) “Was the point to sow chaos? Yes, it was,” Ramaswamy said. “But the real question to ask is whether chaos is really such a bad thing in times such as these.” Some Joe Rogan-level wisdom there.

* And Gaetz was revealed to have had a little help in his bid to upend the House. Unfrozen caveman live streamer (four hours every weekday!) and shirt wearer ([link removed]) Steve Bannon helped stoke the fire. ([link removed]) Gaetz apparently marched out of the House directly into Bannon’s studio after the vote so the pair could celebrate on air. Recently Bannon has been focused on taking out McCarthy and what he describes as “uniparty” Republicans whom he can no longer distinguish from Democrats. But he’s always trying to sow chaos. He’s told lawmakers in the past to “Get an amendment. Make it as outrageous as possible. Just be on there—don’t worry if you’re not on Fox—we’ll cut it, we’ll play it.”

While the Republicans are busy eating each other, they are also searching for someone to be the new speaker and so far, the candidate list is short. But one name stands above the rest, as always.
* The only candidates to throw their hats in the ring so far are Iron Man Steve Scalise (R-LA) and creepy uncle Jim Jordan (R-OH). Steve Kern (R-OK) has also told people he plans to run but has not officially entered the race. And, of course, the name mentioned most frequently is Donald Trump. It certainly seems like something he would find attractive—lots of attention, surrounded by sycophants—and he may have the votes. He posted a doctored picture of himself sitting in the House speaker’s chair, although it could just be another one of Donald’s classic “jokes.” But don’t worry, America. One little rule may stand in his way. ([link removed])

* Clause 10 (b) of rule XXIII in the official Rules of the House of Representatives ([link removed]) states:
“a member … who has been indicted for or otherwise formally charged with criminal conduct in any Federal, State, or local court punishable as a felony for which a sentence of two or more years’ imprisonment may be imposed should … step aside from any conference leadership position until judicial or executive proceedings result in an acquittal or the charges are dismissed or reduced.” Thank god Trump is currently getting litingant-ed up by courts all over this beautiful country.

Enough about the Republicans, it’s time to check in on our Boy Blue. President Biden has reversed a key campaign promise and said he will waive 26 federal laws including the Clean Air Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act to build about 20 new miles of Donald Trump’s border wall in southern Texas. The “wall” will mostly consist of bollards in a concrete base, CCTV cameras, and gates, according to a proposal by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, an agency inside the Department of Homeland Security. A CPB agent on horseback was photographed whipping migrants in 2021, something Biden deplored publicly ([link removed]) . Biden swore not to expand the wall ([link removed]) in 2020.

What’s driving this? Biden doesn’t even think border walls work. That’s something he said today ([link removed]) ! He also said he could either use the money or lose it, and decided to use it after trying to get Congress to reallocate it. “The money was appropriated for the border wall. I tried to get them to reappropriate it, to redirect that money. They didn’t, they wouldn’t,” he told reporters. “And in the meantime, there’s nothing under the law other than they have to use the money for what it was appropriated. I can’t stop that.” Or rather, if he had stopped it, the money wouldn’t have been used at all. As Nelson Muntz put it, gotta nuke something ([link removed]) . The President's gonna do what The President’s gonna do.


At least 55 people were killed in a Russian missile strike on a village in eastern Ukraine. ([link removed]) A 6 year old boy and a 62 year old woman were among the dead in an attack President Vlodymyr Zelenskyy called “ a demonstrably brutal Russian crime.”


This attack comes at a time where American interest in helping Ukraine is waning. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that US public support for arming Ukraine has declined from 46% in May to 41% this week. ([link removed])


In a shocker, Speedbump Trump has urged the judge in his hush money payments case to dismiss the charges. ([link removed])


Elon Musk has stripped automatically generated news headlines from X ([link removed]) in an effort to stop users from leaving the site, posing a challenge for media outlets who rely on the revenue those clicks create. It also poses a challenge for anyone on X looking for actual information.


One member of Congress who has NOT been floated to replace the House speaker is George Santos. He blamed his accountant for his financial messiness that got him indicted and now his ex-campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, will plead guilty in a Federal inquiry for conspiring to defraud the U.S. Government. ([link removed]) Why not Santos, Republican friends? He’d fit right in.


On Thursday the U.S. shot down an armed Turkish drone ([link removed]) that was flying too close to American troops in Syria. The drone was destroyedby F-16 aircraft when it flew less than a half a kilometer (0.3 miles) from U.S. troops and was deemed a threat.


South Korean Teachers are seeking protection from the harassment of parents. ([link removed]) Hundreds of thousands of teachers have joined protests over unfair demands and violent behavior from parents.


Eleven strikes and another of Biden’s dogs has is out of the White House. ([link removed]) Commander Biden gives even Hunter a run for his money after reports surfaced that he had been involved in eleven separate biting incidents. Enjoy Delaware, Commander.

The rate of fairearm fatalities is sharply rising among children in the U.S. ([link removed]) The rate increased among children under 18 by 87 percent from 2011 through 2021.


A man was arrested in the Wisconsin Capitol building yesterday after demanding to see the governor while shirtless and wearing a holstered gun without a permit. ([link removed]) After he posted bail he returned to the Capitol with a shotgun and then was taken where he probably should have gone in the first place—the hospital.

Denver, Colorado has been experimenting with giving their unhoused population something they definitely need: money. For the last year the Denver Basic Income Project (DBIP) has been giving about 800 unhoused people regular sums ranging from $50 to $1,000 a month. ([link removed]) The result has been reduced homelessness and more full-time employment. Broadly, policies in the U.S. have focused on mental health and addiction but research has "consistently found that homelessness in an area is driven by housing costs." Researchers have concluded that most people in the study were significantly better off than before the cash infusion.

Three groups get money in different amounts: One group receives $1,000 a month for a year; another group receives $6,500 up front and then $500 a month from there; and another gets just $50 a month. Unsurprisingly, the group that received the largest amount of money saw the most improvement. Mark Donovan started the DBIP in 2021 after striking it rich with a clothing company and investments and thought there was a better way to give back. At the start of the experiment, fewer than 10% of those enrolled were in permanent housing and by the six month mark that number had climbed to nearly a third of participants. The DBIP is Donovan’s nonprofit, but it is funded with $2 million in public money, specifically pandemic relief funds allocated to it by the Denver city council ([link removed]) .
