Friend,

Two days ago, the House voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. And today, I want to talk about why it happened – and why it’s more important than ever to fight back against MAGA extremism. I firmly believe that we must take the House back from Republican incompetence next year – our democracy depends on it.

Tuesday’s vote made history, friend. In the history of our country, a Speaker of the House has never been removed from office like this.

How did this happen? As you remember, this January Kevin McCarthy underwent 15 rounds of votes before winning his election to his former position, Speaker of the House. As part of the negotiations, he caved to the MAGA extremists in his own party who wanted to trade their support for a rule change: only one House member is needed to introduce a “motion to vacate,” which starts the process for removing the Speaker of the House.

So when Congressmember Matt Gaetz submitted his motion to vacate, I knew there was going to be chaos. My good friend and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries held an emergency meeting with the full Democratic Caucus to discuss what we should do. We discussed many options, but ultimately we decided that it’s not up to us to save Republicans from their own party. Enabling extremism has its consequences.

What’s next? Republicans will have to chart a path forward out of their own mess. Once they choose a new leader, there will be another vote for Speaker. And regardless of whom they choose, I know that I will be proud to cast my vote for Hakeem Jeffries. He has the dignity, integrity, and commitment to public service that is needed to lead this Congress.

But to be honest with you, friend, I’m frustrated that it’s come to this. Until the Republican majority gets it together, the House cannot vote on anything meaningful. An entire branch of our government has essentially ground to a halt.

MAGA Republican chaos means that I can’t do my job: serving the people of Brooklyn and fighting for climate change protections, reproductive justice, healthcare access, affordable housing, and more.

The extreme MAGA Republican agenda is a huge threat to our democracy. And they have held the legislative process hostage.

I’ve served in many Congresses before, and I know that the only path forward is to elect a Democratic House so we can start moving forward again on the issues that matter to working-class, everyday Americans. If you’re as frustrated as I am, please consider making a donation of any amount today to elect a Democratic majority and fight back against MAGA Republican extremism. [[link removed]]
