Good morning from Washington, D.C.! We are still feeling the momentum of last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference, where Heritage President Kay C. James put fire in the bellies of attendees with an energizing address. Meanwhile, with so many demagogues still stumping on behalf of socialism, we asked a young man who escaped socialist Venezuela what he thinks about socialism vs. liberty. You won’t want to miss his moving video. Last week, we hosted Heritage’s third annual Jay A. Parker Lecture featuring retired federal judge Janice Rogers Brown, who gave a sharp rebuke to anti-American voices who are intent on tearing this country down. Read her recommendations on how conservatives can counter them. Lastly, Heritage sat down with an expert on family wealth management, who offers practical advice for families.

Heritage President Kay C. James gave a rousing speech last Thursday at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. “Ladies and gentleman, we face a battle today between those who want to preserve this nation and those who are working to bring her down from within,” says James. “The question I have for you is, are you ready for the battle? Are you ready for the fight?” She urged CPAC attendees to show the same character, determination, and sacrifice that helped found this republic in order to preserve it. A Victim of Socialism Finds Hope in America <[link removed]>
Every time you turn on the television, it seems there are more and more people who want to bring socialism to America. But what do people who came to America from a socialist country think about socialism? We spoke with Daniel DiMartino, a young man who grew up amidst the violence, poverty, and corruption of socialist Venezuela. Fortunately, he was able to escape to America. “Free things sound good, but government-provided free things come at the price of government control over your life,” says DiMartino. Watch Daniel’s moving story about the horrors he experienced in a socialist country, and his deep appreciation for the freedoms he now enjoys in America. <[link removed]>
Judge Janice Rogers Brown Takes Aim at Anti-American Mob Mentality <[link removed]>
There is a bitter, vicious movement in America that believes our
country is riddled with bigotry, hatred, and oppression. It is important to ask ourselves, do these voices criticize with the intent of improving, or simply to tear down? This was the subject of a talk given by former judge Janice Rogers Brown, who served on the influential U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. She spoke at Heritage last week at the third annual Jay A. Parker Lecture, held in honor of the founding father of the emerging black conservative movement. Brown criticized the demonization of America in this way: “It is an analysis expressed not in a manner of a critic hoping to improve, but as an enemy eager to destroy. There are signs of this everywhere we look.” Read more about Brown’s lecture in The Daily Signal <[link removed]> or watch her insightful words <[link removed]>.
Shirtsleeves to Shirtsleeves in Three Generations <[link removed]>
Conservatives pride themselves on hard work and fiscal responsibility. Unfortunately, these values aren’t passed down through DNA. The old adage “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations”—which means that a family can start with nothing, work hard and gain wealth, and then lose that wealth by the time their great-grandchildren take control—has held true through the ages. That was the experience of Tom Rogerson, whose own family encountered great financial loss over several generations. Rogerson now teaches families how to raise fiscally responsible children, preserve family wisdom, and reinforce shared values <[link removed]>. He recently shared his valuable insights with Heritage.
