MARCH 2, 2020: Forty-six (46) Pivot Counties ([link removed]) will vote in the Super Tuesday primaries ([link removed]) tomorrow. These are counties that voted twice for President Obama ([link removed]) and then voted for President Trump ([link removed]) .[1] ([link removed])
The total includes 19 Pivot Counties in Minnesota ([link removed]) , 8 in Maine ([link removed]) , 6 in North Carolina ([link removed]) , 5 in Virginia ([link removed]) , 4 in Colorado ([link removed]) , and 1 each in Arkansas ([link removed]) , Tennessee ([link removed]) , Texas ([link removed]) , and Vermont ([link removed]) . It will be interesting to compare Democratic primary turnout in these counties with the rest of the Super Tuesday electorate. The results may provide clues as to what we might expect in the general election.
Nationwide, there are 206 Pivot Counties. In 2016, they accounted for just 5% of all votes cast. However, they accounted for 51% of net Republican popular vote gains.[2] ([link removed])
