March 2, 2020: Forty-six (46) Pivot Counties will vote in the Super Tuesday primaries tomorrow. These are counties that voted twice for President Obama and then voted for President Trump.[1]

The total includes 19 Pivot Counties in Minnesota, 8 in Maine, 6 in North Carolina, 5 in Virginia, 4 in Colorado, and 1 each in Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, and Vermont. It will be interesting to compare Democratic primary turnout in these counties with the rest of the Super Tuesday electorate. The results may provide clues as to what we might expect in the general election.

Nationwide, there are 206 Pivot Counties. In 2016, they accounted for just 5% of all votes cast. However, they accounted for 51% of net Republican popular vote gains.[2]
