Friend, October is LGBTQ History Month — a time to celebrate the achievements of LGBTQ icons around the globe. This month, we’ll be sharing the stories of individuals who have shaped history through advocacy, representation, and entertainment.

Learn more about several key figures in LGBTQ history now to inspire the next generation of LGBTQ activists, politicians, entertainers, and beyond! ⬇️

Marsha P. Johnson was one of the most notable figures of the gay rights movement in the 60s and 70s, playing a significant part in the Stonewall uprising in 1969. She advocated for gay and transgender rights, homeless LGBTQ youth, and those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Harvey Milk was an LGBTQ activist and politician who became the first openly gay elected official when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. While in office, Harvey sponsored a bill banning discrimination in public accommodations, housing, and employment based on sexual orientation.

Mark Bingham was an American rugby player who co-founded the Gotham Knights Rugby Football Club, an inclusive rugby team in New York, to help fight stigma in sports. Unfortunately, Mark was killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, as one of the heroic passengers who stormed the cockpit on Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, PA. Every two years, the International Gay Rugby Association holds an international tournament in honor of his name.

The LGBTQ community has a storied history of heroic activism, dedication, and groundbreaking work. We hope the stories we share will inspire you to tell your own in a true, authentic way – or to help inspire LGBTQ young people in your life!
