With Help From Dems, Ohio Has Gerrymandering Déjà Vu ([link removed])

By Katy Shanahan

Here are some recent updates.
* The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted ([link removed]) Louisiana Republicans' request and ordered a lower court to cancel its hearing — previously scheduled for Oct. 3-5 — on a new congressional map. This delays the creation of a new map with a second majority-Black district.

* Eleven Michigan Republican lawmakers filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit invoking the radical independent state legislature theory to challenge two voting rights amendments to the Michigan Constitution that voters approved in 2018 and 2022.

* Also, the Michigan House of Representatives sent ([link removed]) five bills to expand voting access to the state Senate. The legislation would allow individuals ages 16 to 17 and a half to pre-register to vote, create an online portal to apply for a mail-in ballot and more.

* A lawsuit challenging mail-in ballot restrictions in Georgia's omnibus voter suppression law Senate Bill 202 will head ([link removed]) to trial, allowing the fight against voter suppression in Georgia to continue.

* Judge Tanya Chutkan denied ([link removed]) former President Donald Trump's request to recuse herself from his Washington, D.C. election subversion case. Learn more about Trump’s democracy-related indictments here. ([link removed])

* In Tempe, Arizona, President Joe Biden gave ([link removed]) remarks on the critical moment democracy is experiencing in the United States, stating ([link removed]) , “Democracy is not a partisan issue. It's an American issue…Democracy should unite all Americans regardless of political affiliation.”

Here’s what to expect coming up.
* In tomorrow’s Daily Docket, we will cover what October litigation to pay attention to and the critical decisions Democracy Docket is waiting on!

* On tomorrow’s episode of Defending Democracy, Marc and Paige speak with Democracy Docket contributor and Alliance for Justice ([link removed]) president Rakim Brooks ([link removed]) on much-needed and long-overdue court reform! Listen on Apple ([link removed]) , Spotify ([link removed]) or wherever you get your podcasts ([link removed]) .
