Daily Docket — Thursday, Sept. 28

Here are some recent updates.

  • The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted Louisiana Republicans' request and ordered a lower court to cancel its hearing — previously scheduled for Oct. 3-5 — on a new congressional map. This delays the creation of a new map with a second majority-Black district.

  • Eleven Michigan Republican lawmakers filed a lawsuit invoking the radical independent state legislature theory to challenge two voting rights amendments to the Michigan Constitution that voters approved in 2018 and 2022.

  • Also, the Michigan House of Representatives sent five bills to expand voting access to the state Senate. The legislation would allow individuals ages 16 to 17 and a half to pre-register to vote, create an online portal to apply for a mail-in ballot and more.

  • A lawsuit challenging mail-in ballot restrictions in Georgia's omnibus voter suppression law Senate Bill 202 will head to trial, allowing the fight against voter suppression in Georgia to continue.

  • In Tempe, Arizona, President Joe Biden gave remarks on the critical moment democracy is experiencing in the United States, stating, “Democracy is not a partisan issue. It's an American issue…Democracy should unite all Americans regardless of political affiliation.”

Here’s what to expect coming up.

  • In tomorrow’s Daily Docket, we will cover what October litigation to pay attention to and the critical decisions Democracy Docket is waiting on!
