What happens when families do not have access to quality childcare?

Women have to make sacrifices — missing promotions, losing access to benefits, and often leaving the workforce altogether. According to a 2022 report, 46% of mothers who remain unemployed left the workforce in 2021 due to childcare issues.

Children fall behind without access to early care and education, which impacts their development and learning.

Black women and other women of color who do this work continue to be undercompensated and unable to take care of their own families.

Why is this crisis happening?

Many factors have led to the childcare crisis, including:

* A lack of government investment in childcare

* The continued invisibility of the childcare workforce, who work behind closed doors

* Racist exclusions, dating back to the 1930s, have denied domestic workers basic labor protections, forcing them to make difficult choices to remain in this essential workforce

As these factors show little sign of changing, workers continue to leave for other industries, which makes it harder for families to find childcare.

What can we do?

The National Domestic Workers Alliance is organizing and advocating for a future in which every family has access to quality childcare. That means:

1. Children would be safe, fed, and thriving in a nurturing environment regardless of background.

2. Care workers would get a fair wage so they can take care of themselves and their children.

3. Workers would have access to basic rights to ensure protection from wage theft, underpayment, and harassment.
