Join the fight to fix America's childcare crisis,
National Domestic Workers Alliance (Logo)

John — in three days, emergency pandemic subsidies that have supported childcare providers and low‑income families will end.

When they do, 3.2 million children could lose their childcare. Millions of parents and guardians will lose access to critical child care services that allow them to work. And care workers – including domestic workers – will lose their jobs.

America is in the midst of a childcare crisis, and the end of these subsidies will push many to the edge of a childcare cliff. Why is this happening, and what does it mean for families across the nation?

We've got your questions answered below. But John, if you're ready to join the fight to fix America's childcare crisis, here's one thing you can do right now:

Click here to contact Congress and demand they pass the Child Care Stabilization Act so that children don't lose childcare and care workers don’t lose jobs in the next few days.

Want to learn more? We’ve got you! Let us break down why this is happening and how you can help to solve this crisis:

What happens when families do not have access to quality childcare?

Women have to make sacrifices — missing promotions, losing access to benefits, and often leaving the workforce altogether. According to a 2022 report, 46% of mothers who remain unemployed left the workforce in 2021 due to childcare issues.

Children fall behind without access to early care and education, which impacts their development and learning.

Black women and other women of color who do this work continue to be undercompensated and unable to take care of their own families.

Why is this crisis happening?

Many factors have led to the childcare crisis, including:

As these factors show little sign of changing, workers continue to leave for other industries, which makes it harder for families to find childcare.

What can we do?

The National Domestic Workers Alliance is organizing and advocating for a future in which every family has access to quality childcare. That means:

  1. Children would be safe, fed, and thriving in a nurturing environment regardless of background.
  2. Care workers would get a fair wage so they can take care of themselves and their children.
  3. Workers would have access to basic rights to ensure protection from wage theft, underpayment, and harassment.

These are long battles, at times against systems designed over a century ago to keep domestic workers in the shadows. And, right now there is an imminent decision that can shape the future of childcare for families and care workers for years to come – and we need your help.

Dignity, Unity, Power

The majority of domestic workers sit at the center of some of our nation’s most decisive issues because of who they are and what they do: they are women – mostly women of color, immigrants, mothers, and low-wage workers. They are impacted by almost every policy affecting the future of our economy, democracy and country.

Domestic workers can lead us toward a new, inclusive vision for the future for all of us -- and your grassroots support is the fuel that can get us there.
