Dear John,

As published in the Guardian ([link removed]) today, new analysis by PAN UK reveals that there are now 36 pesticides that can be used in the UK that are not currently allowed in EU countries. Of those, thirteen are considered Highly Hazardous Pesticides including four that are highly toxic to bees, one that contaminates water and one that is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Analysis reveals a growing threat to human health as the list also includes a number of carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, developmental or reproductive toxins, among others. ** Join us at the Labour Party Conference 2023
------------------------------------------------------------

Our fringe session ‘Health, Environment and Social Justice: Everything the Next Government Needs to Know About Pesticides’ takes place on 9th October in Liverpool. A conference pass is not needed for this event and everyone is welcome to attend.

We will be hosting a panel discussion with Daniel Zeichner MP (Shadow Minister for Food, Farming and Fisheries), Ruth Cadbury MP (Shadow Minister for International Trade) and Jon Burke (former Cabinet Member for Energy, Waste, Environment and Public Realm at the London Borough of Hackney).

This session will cover a range of pesticide related issues, including how to make UK farming more sustainable, protect our food standards from new trade deals and make our urban centres pesticide-free. This will be followed by a Pesticide Free Towns campaign drop-in clinic where we will hear from campaigners who have worked with local authorities to go pesticide-free, and from PAN UK experts who will be on hand to give advice on running successful campaigns with councils.

** PAN UK joins the Agroecology Coalition
------------------------------------------------------------

We’re pleased to announce that PAN UK recently joined the Agroecology Coalition ([link removed]) . The purpose of the Coalition is to accelerate the transformation of food systems guided by the 13 principles of agroecology defined by the High-Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) adopted by 197 FAO Members in 2019. Various ongoing initiatives and policies implemented by governments, producer and civil society organisations, or research institutions on all continents and across all scales, attest to the potential of agroecological approaches to respond to the multiple challenges facing food systems.
