Year after year, you circle it on your calendar and count down the days by marking little Xs, just like in a movie montage—the third Tuesday of September, National Voter Registration Day. It’s up there with all the best holidays: your birthday, Fourth of July, National Dress up Your Pet Day (January 14th).
But this year, we have to come clean. It’s not a federal holiday. It’s not even a state holiday. It’s just a day that a bunch of organizations made up to centralize our efforts and convince people to help register new voters.
For those of you who haven’t slammed your laptops shut in anger and betrayal, registering new voters and helping voters keep their registrations up-to-date are some of the most important tactics we have in our toolbox. We know that there are a lot of people out there who share our values but lack information, get tripped up by a purposefully opaque registration system, or feel apathetic about the value of their vote. That’s all especially true about young people, whose support and action is a key part of the path to victory for progressives up and down the ballot.
So let’s help change that. Join our friends at NextGen all day long on September 19th, National Voter Registration Day, to text and call young voters and help them get registered.

We hope you’ll forgive us for participating in this goofy civic holiday. If Dunkin’ gets National Donut Day, American democracy deserves this one little treat.
