I’m excited to share that today Governor Hochul signed two of my bills into law!

S.4982 ([link removed]) is a big deal for workers at Starbucks, Amazon, Trader Joe’s and any other company where organizing is booming. We know that in an effort to control and intimidate workers, employers have been requiring workers to sit through meetings where the employers’ political beliefs are presented with no opportunity for debate or dialogue.

You do not check your First Amendment rights at the door when you arrive to work. S.4982 grants workers the ability to excuse themselves from captive audience meetings and hold their boss accountable if they face retaliation.
The second bill, S.1974, protects public school teachers, administrators, and support staff by finally correcting their exclusion from a section of labor law that requires the development and implementation of a safety plan. As the mother of two public school students, I know that taking care of the safety of our educators also makes our students more safe. I’m thrilled that this was signed just in time for the first day of school!

As Labor Chair, I am unapologetic about my desire to make it easier for working people to organize their workplace. It’s the only way we will rebuild the middle class and make New York a place where working families can thrive again.
