We have a double dose of good labor news ahead of Labor Day! First, the Biden-Harris administration is proposing a new rule [[link removed]] that would extend overtime pay to as many as 3.6 million workers! This change would require employers to pay overtime to salaried workers who are in executive, administrative, and professional roles but make less than $1,059 a week, or $55,068 a year for full-time employees. This is a win for working families everywhere!
Second, the United Farm Workers—which has seen its membership drop from 60,000 to 6,000— successfully unionized 500 workers [[link removed]] at five farms in New York. This win shows the power of collective bargaining in securing better wages and working conditions for farmworkers, who are the backbone of our food system (and, more generally speaking, immigrants—who make up more than 70% of farmworkers in the U.S.—have always been part of the backbone of the labor movement).

Hate and white supremacy are one of the biggest threats to our country and democracy. Sadly, we saw the latest example of this [[link removed]] just last weekend, when a white gunman with a swastika-emblazoned assault-style rifle killed three Black people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida.
This tragedy becomes even more alarming in the context of elected officials and other public figures who subtly endorse or echo these hateful ideologies. Such tacit approvals only embolden further acts of hate. Now, more than ever, it's crucial to stay woke, hold our leaders accountable, and relentlessly combat the white supremacy and hate that continue to afflict our communities.

And Updates

On Monday, we teamed up with the National Network for Arab American Communities [[link removed]] in Dearborn, Michigan for a special event!
We were joined by emerging Arab American leaders interested in public service careers, who asked questions and heard from professionals like our CEO and President Ghida Dagher, Congresswoman Cori Bush’s Chief of Staff Abbas Alawieh, and our alumna Zeinab Alhashemi (the panel was also moderated by our Program Manager Yasmeen Kadouh). It was a fantastic event and we had a great time meeting so many inspiring future Arab American leaders!
