We have a double dose of good labor news ahead of Labor Day! First, the Biden-Harris administration is proposing a new rule that would extend overtime pay to as many as 3.6 million workers! This change would require employers to pay overtime to salaried workers who are in executive, administrative, and professional roles but make less than $1,059 a week, or $55,068 a year for full-time employees. This is a win for working families everywhere!

Second, the United Farm Workers—which has seen its membership drop from 60,000 to 6,000—successfully unionized 500 workers at five farms in New York. This win shows the power of collective bargaining in securing better wages and working conditions for farmworkers, who are the backbone of our food system (and, more generally speaking, immigrants—who make up more than 70% of farmworkers in the U.S.—have always been part of the backbone of the labor movement).

Hate and white supremacy are one of the biggest threats to our country and democracy. Sadly, we saw the latest example of this just last weekend, when a white gunman with a swastika-emblazoned assault-style rifle killed three Black people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida.

This tragedy becomes even more alarming in the context of elected officials and other public figures who subtly endorse or echo these hateful ideologies. Such tacit approvals only embolden further acts of hate. Now, more than ever, it's crucial to stay woke, hold our leaders accountable, and relentlessly combat the white supremacy and hate that continue to afflict our communities.

On Monday, we teamed up with the National Network for Arab American Communities in Dearborn, Michigan for a special event!

We were joined by emerging Arab American leaders interested in public service careers, who asked questions and heard from professionals like our CEO and President Ghida Dagher, Congresswoman Cori Bush’s Chief of Staff Abbas Alawieh, and our alumna Zeinab Alhashemi (the panel was also moderated by our Program Manager Yasmeen Kadouh). It was a fantastic event and we had a great time meeting so many inspiring future Arab American leaders!

Here are some pretty awesome things our alums have done recently:

  • Tim Hernández (2021 Ready to Win), a teacher and activist, was elected to fill a vacant seat in Colorado’s State House District 4. He now becomes the first lawmaker from Gen Z to serve in the Colorado legislature. Congrats, Tim!
  • New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez (2018 Ready to Lead New American Women and 2019 Ready to Win) and New York City Councilmember Amanda Farías (2016 Ready to Lead New American Women, Ready to Win, and our former New York State Coordinator) took action on behalf of asylum seekers (P.S. Check out Senator Gonzalez’s shirt! She’s #ReadyToLead ✊)
  • Lan Diep (2012 Ready to Lead Louisiana), a former city councilmember representing San Jose, California, recently became the Vice President for Programs and Community Engagement at the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS).
  • Jessica González-Rojas (2019 Ready to Lead New American Women and Ready to Win) stood in solidarity with American Airlines flight attendants at LaGuardia who voted to authorize a strike.
  • A bill introduced and authored by California State Senator Aisha Wahab (2012 Ready to Lead California and 2017 Ready to Win), which would make California the first state to ban caste discrimination, passed the California Assembly on Monday.
  • Arizona State Senator Priya Sundareshan (2021 Ready to Lead Online National Women’s Training) called for the need to raise legislator pay. This would open the door for more working-class folks to run for state legislature, and is something we've been talking about for years!
  • New York City Councilmembers Shahana Hanif (2019 Ready to Lead Georgia and Ready to Win) and Crystal Hudson (2019 Ready to Lead New American Women and Ready to Win) co-sponsored a bill that would provide access to free masks, other PPE, and rapid tests through the mail to New York City residents.
  • Colorado State Representative Elizabeth Velasco (2022 Ready to Lead National Women’s Training) received the 2023 Local Legislative Champion award from Voces Unidas.
  • Zena Ozeir (2022 Ready to Lead Midwest and Ready to Win) was appointed as an Assistant Attorney General in Michigan.

Know someone who should be included in this list? Let us know! We're so proud of our NAL fam for taking action to create a stronger, more inclusive democracy and would love to give everyone a shoutout!

Help fight systemic white supremacy by supporting our mission to get more women, immigrants, and underrepresented Americans on the ballot and into power.
