John,

As Americans prepare to soak up the last of summer this Labor Day weekend, I want to take a moment to remember why we celebrate.

I recently had the honor of standing on the picket line with writers and actors in New York City in their ongoing battle against Hollywood’s biggest media companies. These are the people who have entertained and moved us, the heart and soul of the industry, and all they’re asking for is a small share in the success they’ve created. Yet these major corporations refuse to negotiate with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA in good faith, choosing instead to wait striking workers out until they can no longer afford to stop working.

Sign if you agree: Hollywood executives must engage in good-faith negotiations with the writers and actors that make their work possible. [[link removed]]

With the advent of streaming services, major media outlets are finding new ways to exploit writers and actors by failing to compensate them for the residuals [[link removed]] created by streaming their work. Meanwhile, the rise of artificial intelligence puts creatives at risk of losing their jobs in what is a fundamentally human industry.

Striking writers and actors, the forces behind Hollywood for generations, are not asking for a lot. They seek only dignity and respect in the form of fair compensation and job security, and what they’re fighting for reflects a greater pattern in the modern labor movement.

Right now, workers across the country are standing up for their right to better wages, better working conditions, and a seat at the table. Employees at Starbucks, Trader Joe’s, UPS, and elsewhere are making their voices heard and highlighting the value they bring to the companies that have exploited them. And they’re winning despite the efforts of powerful corporations to prevent changes affecting their bottom line.

Now it’s Hollywood’s turn. Tell the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers: Listen to the Demands of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. [[link removed]]

In solidarity,
Ro
