John,
The United States used to lead the world in steel production. From the very start of World War II, we provided rapid support to our allies and later ourselves. By the 1950s we produced over fifty percent of the world’s steel, providing jobs to over 700,000 Americans.
Not anymore. Steel mill after steel mill has been closed across the country, devastating communities like Lordstown, Ohio, and Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Where we once dominated the steel industry, we have zero top steel production facilities left. We went from being the world’s largest exporter to the world’s largest importer of steel.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We can begin to make steel in the United States again. And we can do it better and cleaner than China.

I’m working across the aisle with my colleagues in Congress to introduce a modern steel act, uniting the federal government with steel companies and steel unions to bring cleaner, better steel manufacturing back to US soil.
That means creating thousands of good-paying union jobs. It means rebuilding the communities we left behind. It means producing steel using recycled materials and cleaner energy sources. It means strengthening our economy and working to restore the middle class.
Sign the petition: Tell Congress to invest in reestablishing the United States as a steel manufacturing powerhouse. [[link removed]]
