John,
The United States used to lead the world in steel production. From the very start of World War II, we provided rapid support to our allies and later ourselves. By the 1950s we produced over fifty percent of the world’s steel, providing jobs to over 700,000 Americans.
Not anymore. Steel mill after steel mill has been closed across the country, devastating communities like Lordstown, Ohio, and Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Where we once dominated the steel industry, we have zero top steel production facilities left. We went from being the world’s largest exporter to the world’s largest importer of steel. |
