This July was the hottest month ever recorded. But while outdoor workers faced mounting health repercussions from extreme heat, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill to remove construction workers’ right to a 10-minute water break — all while sitting in the comfort of his air conditioned office.

Abbott’s red pen legislation is jeopardizing the health and safety of thousands of Texans in the name of corporate greed. That’s why last month, I took to the steps of the U.S. Capitol and led an eight-hour thirst strike in solidarity with workers across our country who deserve the right to a basic water break.

Look: Our climate crisis is spurring longer, more intense heat waves that have already exposed our workers to health risks — even with the right to a ten-minute water break.

To remove this basic protection during the hottest summer in our planet’s history isn’t just cruel. It’s outright inhumane, and we have to fight back against politicians like Abbott who continue to sell out our workers in the name of corporate greed.

So many issues in Washington are polarizing, but this shouldn’t be one of them, John. We can all agree that at a MINIMUM, our workers deserve basic water breaks.
