Last year, NILC Immigrant Justice Fund proudly supported U.S. Representative
Pramila Jayapal's re-election to Congress, representing Washington's 7th
Congressional District. At the start of the 118th Congress this year, she made
history as the first immigrant to serve as Ranking Member of the House
Judiciary's immigration subcommittee.

In 2016, Rep. Jayapal was the first South Asian American woman elected to the
U.S. House of Representatives. Since her congressional career began, she's been
a critical, progressive voice boldly fighting for humane immigration policies,
workers' rights and health care access for all, and racial, economic, gender,
and immigrant justice.

She has also been instrumental in sponsoring and introducing crucial pieces of
legislation, including the Health Equity and Access under Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Families Act , which would remove xenophobic barriers to health care for immigrants,
regardless of status.

Years before her congressional career began, Rep. Jayapal immigrated to this
country at 16 years old and “was lucky enough to have the opportunity to live
the American Dream, a dream that is out of reach for too many immigrants today.”

Her journey is an important reminder that the work we do to amplify immigrant
voices and expand our political reach and power is necessary — and our ambitious
goals are possible.

We must do everything we can to ensure more leaders like Rep. Jayapal are
elected — and that means helping pave the way for immigrants and people of color
