Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Thanks to supporters like you, AFSC and partners are funding essential work to aid refugees from Ukraine. We’re supporting several organizations, including one called Patchwork in Poland. Since the start of the war, Patchwork has provided a range of services to refugees with disabilities and their families. Learn more in this interview with Patchwork co-founder Khrystyna Rudenko. Here are this week’s picks to inform and support your activism.

Tell Congress: Stop border militarization and protect migrant lives: Last week, the bodies of two migrants were found in the Rio Grande. They were near the floating anti-migrant barrier recently installed by Gov. Greg Abbott. The barrier is another example of the deadly impact of border militarization, which has cost thousands of migrant lives. As Congress debates next year’s budget, tell them NO more funding for border militarization! [link removed]

At a New Jersey women’s group, survivors find healing and support: Every month, a group of women gather at AFSC’s office in Newark, New Jersey. All are immigrants who moved to the U.S. for a better life. Most are survivors of domestic abuse. Many are mothers who’ve worked to keep their families together. Now they’re learning from each other and advocating for more just, humane immigration policies, writes AFSC’s Guissela Galindo. [link removed]

Will you join our work to end Israeli apartheid?: Earlier this year, AFSC and a coalition of faith groups and other organizations launched a new initiative to end Israeli apartheid. We’re urging congregations, faith communities, schools, and organizations to take a pledge to work against apartheid and racism in all its forms. Over 130 groups have already signed on. Learn more about how your community can join our efforts. [link removed]
