State Rep. Ryan Guillen finds himself in the middle of the action in his
first term as a Republican

The longtime Rio Grande City representative, who switched parties in 2021,
has played a key role in gun and immigration legislation this year.

State Rep. Ryan Guillen was working the crowd at a Dairy Queen in the
northern end of his district earlier this month, coincidentally the same
city where he announced over a year ago he would change parties.

The Rio Grande City lawmaker fielded questions about the property-tax
impasse that was gripping Austin at the time, predicting a deal was near.
He high-fived a woman who was thankful for his resolution naming
Floresville the official Peanut Capital of Texas. He gave out his cell
phone number to the full audience, asking them to call him anytime.

Some were aware that — standing in a county where Donald Trump voters
outnumbered Joe Biden voters 3-to-1 — they were talking to a former
longtime Democrat.

“It does matter, and a lot of us were concerned about that at first, but
he’s come through,” said Terry Rolland, a member of Floresville City
Council who described herself as a “constitutional conservative.” [1]Read

A "Confounded" Biden Team Sells Bidenomics

The White House is doing a full-court press to sell Bidenomics, with
Council of Economic Advisers Chair Jared Bernstein going on Fox News Sunday
to pitch conservative audiences. One of their major selling points is the
recent decline in the year-over-year rate of inflation. From the June
survey for Winning the Issues (June 19-21), by 2:1, voters did not believe
the statement that the annual inflation rate has fallen for ten months
straight (27-55 believe-do not believe). This is one of several examples of
the credibility problem that the White House is encountering in trying to
sell Bidenomics. As Axios reported over the weekend, "the Biden team has
long been frustrated, at times confounded, that these positive data points
are not reflected in his approval rating, which is stuck in the low 40s."
Bernstein's explanation was that "it takes a while for people's sentiment
to catch up to those new trends." Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi was asked by
CNN's Dana Bash why voters were reluctant to believe their claims of
economic improvements; her response was "a lot of it is about messaging."

Former Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte launches

campaign for NH governor

"I'm running for Governor because New Hampshire is one election away from
becoming Massachusetts," she said in her announcement.

Former Republican New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte officially launched her
campaign for governor on Monday morning.

"I'm running for Governor because New Hampshire is one election away from
becoming Massachusetts -- from becoming something we are not," she said in
an email announcement. "I was born here and raised here. I raised my kids
here, and you know what? I am going to die here because this state and its
people are different. What we have here is worth fighting for."

Her announcement comes less than a week after incumbent GOP Gov. Chris
Sununu announced that he would not seek a fifth term in 2024. He hasn't

That's the question a lot of analysts are asking about the Republican race
for president, with headlines such as "Tim Scott is turning heads with
donors and early-state voters" and "Tim Scott's formidable charm meets a
tough Republican electorate."

While the South Carolina senator remains well behind front-runner Donald
Trump in the national horserace polls, a number of key indicators - from
favorability ratings to early-state polling to fundraising - suggest Scott
may be the GOP candidate to watch besides the former president or Florida
Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Iowa's caucus kicks off the GOP nomination process

An early read on the race for the Republican nomination in Iowa shows
former President Donald Trump the clear frontrunner - and then there is a
sharp drop off to the rest of the field.

Trump leads by 30 points n a Fox Business survey of Iowa Republicans, as
likely caucus-goers prioritize electability and see him as the one who can
win in 2024.

Here are the numbers: 46% of likely GOP caucus-goers back Trump, putting
him in a category all his own. The next tier is Ron DeSantis at 16% and Tim
Scott at 11%.

From there, it's Vivek Ramaswamy at 6%, Nikki Haley at 5%, Mike Pence at
4%, and Chris Christie and Doug Burgum at 3% each. Asa Hutchinson and
Francis Suarez receive 1% apiece, while Larry Elder and Will Hurd get less
