Mangrove forests occur across the world’s tropical and sub-tropical coastlines, thriving in saline water, in humid and hot conditions, and muddy soils. Human caused deforestation has led to a rapid decline of mangrove forests, threatening biodiversity and contributing to climate change.



Why exactly are mangroves important?



- Mangroves reduce the severity of climate change and its impact on the planet by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon.

- Mangroves create a protective green wall between land and oceans, which reduces the impact of storms, flooding, and erosion.

- Mangroves are home to numerous rare and threatened species of birds, dolphins, sharks, turtles and crocodiles. Nearly 50% of mangrove-associated mammals, 22% of fishes, 16% of plants, 13% of amphibians and 8% of bird and reptile species are threatened with extinction.

- Mangroves provide food, building materials, livelihoods, and natural spaces for millions of people living in coastal communities near these forests.1
