Hi,
Today is World Mangrove Day. Help us honor the day
by supporting The Canopy Project® with a donation. Your support will
help make it possible for us to plant mangrove trees to continue our
efforts to restore these important forests around the globe.
Mangrove forests occur across the world’s tropical and sub-tropical
coastlines, thriving in saline water, in humid and hot conditions, and
muddy soils. Human caused deforestation has led to a rapid decline of
mangrove forests, threatening biodiversity and contributing to climate
change.
Why exactly are mangroves important?
- Mangroves reduce the severity of climate change and its impact on
the planet by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon.
- Mangroves create a protective green wall between land and oceans,
which reduces the impact of storms, flooding, and erosion.
- Mangroves are home to numerous rare and threatened species of
birds, dolphins, sharks, turtles and crocodiles. Nearly 50% of
mangrove-associated mammals, 22% of fishes, 16% of plants, 13% of
amphibians and 8% of bird and reptile species are threatened with
extinction.
- Mangroves provide food, building materials, livelihoods, and
natural spaces for millions of people living in coastal communities
near these forests.1
Join us today by donating to support our reforestation campaign,
The Canopy Project. Through The Canopy Project, EARTHDAY.ORG has
planted millions of mangroves to help restore these crucial ecosystems
in some of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, including
Bangladesh,
India,
Madagascar,
Brazil, and Morocco.
Donate now to The Canopy Project in
recognition of World Mangrove Day! With your help, we can
continue this critical work to protect biodiversity, help vulnerable
communities, and mitigate the impacts of climate change!
Best Regards,
Kathleen Rogers President
