Jessica’s opponent is Republican incumbent Amanda Batten, who has regularly voted against reproductive rights and gun safety. Republicans control Virginia’s House of Delegates by a THIN margin – only four seats. But, according to ABC News, 8 of the 100 House seats on the ballot in VA this year are considered competitive – Jessica’s race is one of them!

That means Jessica’s race could be one of only 7 other opportunities to ensure VA remains a strong, pro-choice state, and a safe haven for women searching for reproductive healthcare access across the South. Meanwhile, Jessica’s opponent was given a D on the ReproRising Legislative Scorecard for supporting anti-choice bills.

Her opponent, David Owen, recently came out in favor of a 15-week abortion ban, a dangerous and inhumane policy that would cause unnecessary suffering to both pregnant women and their babies. Medical tests that detect serious problems with a fetus often cannot confirm these problems until closer to 20 weeks. This would require expectant mothers to carry a pregnancy to term even after learning that their baby will likely not survive after birth. We’re sick of male politicians making uninformed decisions about OUR bodies.

✅ Lashrecse Aird (VA Senate, District 13) recently defeated an anti-choice INCUMBENT Democrat in the primary election. Now, she will face Republican Eric Ditri in the November general election. As a representative In the Virginia House of Delegates, she fought for public school funding, better opportunities for her community, and abortion protections. She also helped Virginia make history when they passed Breonna’s Law, prohibiting no-knock search warrants. We can’t wait to see what she’ll accomplish as a State Senator.
