John,
The situation on Wet'suwet'en territory has inspired solidarity actions on issues of Indigenous title and constitutional and human rights in communities across the country.
Today, our NDP Team was able to get an emergency debate in the House of Commons on the urgent need for the Liberal government to take more substantive action. With tensions rising, pressure on the economy and thousands speaking out across the country, this is where the attention of our Parliament should be.
We are at a critical moment - the only way forward is to have hard conversations and take meaningful action. That requires a leader, and Justin Trudeau has been nowhere in sight.
Jagmeet Singh has been calling on Justin Trudeau to accept the Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs' request to meet with them but he has refused.
Last week, Jagmeet called on Mr. Trudeau to cancel his international tour and come back to Canada. Over the weekend, Justin Trudeau finally cancelled his trip and agreed to come back to Canada.
Now that Trudeau has been shamed into skipping his Caribbean trip, he needs to show some leadership, starting with meeting the Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs - something he's still refusing to do. Our work together forced an important conversation in the House - and now we need to keep putting pressure on Justin Trudeau to act.
If you're on Twitter, tweet at Justin Trudeau and tell him that Canada needs a leader to sit down and meet with the Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs.
Justin Trudeau has said that no relationship is as important to him as Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples. A nation-to-nation relationship requires commitment and action - the Prime Minister knows he has the jurisdiction and the obligation to help de-escalate the situation. So far, he's shown a failure of leadership.
Call on Trudeau to finally show some leadership here:
