Meet Carl, an SAS legacy pledger

John how long have you felt a connection to the ocean?

For Carl, it's been decades: "I started surfing when I was 17 and lived in the East End. My friends and I used to travel to North Cornwall, North Devon – five of us all packed into a rattly old car, not knowing where we’d pitch up, often sharing surfboards. All too often we'd arrive to a messy beach, or raw sewage coming out into the ocean."

As a member, Carl has fueled our ocean activism for years. Then this year, he claimed his free will from our partners at Farewill [[link removed]], and pledged a legacy gift to Surfers Against Sewage.

"I'm sixty, and thinking about wills is inevitable as you grow older. SAS [[link removed]]were offering free wills. [[link removed]] And it got me thinking: "Well, why not leave them some money?"

Still living in London, Carl sees the issues impacting the ocean regularly: "I cycle by conservation areas near the Thames and the River Lea. And I always see plastic and oil leaks, lager cans and coffee cups. Always the same polluters too: Coca-Cola, McDonalds. But we've come a long way, and there's a lot more awareness. And it's charities like SAS that brought attention to the issues."

"To be honest, a legacy gift wasn't something I had actively considered before. But if I'm going to do something, I believe it should be for an organisation that makes a real difference.

"It's quite an unusual thing to divide up one's life. But if there's something left to give, why not direct it to a good cause?

"Even if it's not a huge amount, I hope my contribution can make a difference. When you consider that many others might do the same, it adds up to something meaningful."
