John how long have you felt a connection to the ocean?

For Carl, it's been decades: "I started surfing when I was 17 and lived in the East End. My friends and I used to travel to North Cornwall, North Devon – five of us all packed into a rattly old car, not knowing where we’d pitch up, often sharing surfboards. All too often we'd arrive to a messy beach, or raw sewage coming out into the ocean."

Still living in London, Carl sees the issues impacting the ocean regularly: "I cycle by conservation areas near the Thames and the River Lea. And I always see plastic and oil leaks, lager cans and coffee cups. Always the same polluters too: Coca-Cola, McDonalds. But we've come a long way, and there's a lot more awareness. And it's charities like SAS that brought attention to the issues."

"To be honest, a legacy gift wasn't something I had actively considered before. But if I'm going to do something, I believe it should be for an organisation that makes a real difference.
