Republicans Want To Make It Harder to Vote and Easier to Cheat ([link removed])
By Marc Elias
Here are some updates from today.
* This afternoon, congressional Democrats reintroduced ([link removed]) the Freedom to Vote Act, a comprehensive voting rights bill that would ban partisan gerrymandering in congressional redistricting, set minimum standards for voting access, support election workers and more. Read our breakdown of the updated bill here ([link removed]) .
* The Alabama Legislature is now considering ([link removed]) two different ([link removed]) new congressional maps, neither of which includes the second majority-Black district the state was ordered to draw. Alabama has until Friday to enact a new map. A federal district court will then review the map to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act. If new districts are not enacted by Friday, the court will take over the map-drawing process with a special master.
* In Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) announced ([link removed]) charges against 16 Michigan residents for their role in a false electors plot to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
* A hearing was held in Arizona in an appeal of a lawsuit ([link removed]) over Cochise County's proposed plan to hand count early ballots. Previously, a judge ruled that the county could not conduct a full hand count audit.
In case you missed it yesterday.
* The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously rejected ([link removed]) former President Donald Trump's effort to block the release of the Fulton County grand jury report, which would recommend indictments pertaining to Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
