John,
New research from the World Resources Institute (WRI) has shown that, rather than slowing global deforestation as world leaders pledged to do at COP26, an area of tropical forest the size of Switzerland was lost in 2022. That’s about 11 football pitches of forest lost every minute last year.

Destroying these forests simultaneously eliminates a natural carbon sink and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, worsening the global climate crisis.
According to Rod Taylor, the Global Director of the WRI’s Forests Program, the world is not on the right track to stop deforestation by 2030, and swift action needs to be taken to save these forests to keep global temperatures from reaching dangerous and unsustainable heights.
