New research from the World Resources Institute (WRI) has shown that, rather than slowing global deforestation as world leaders pledged to do at COP26, an area of tropical forest the size of Switzerland was lost in 2022. That’s about 11 football pitches of forest lost every minute last year.
Loss of old-growth tropical forests like those in Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo is particularly bad because these areas are huge carbon sinks. This means that these forests help to remove large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere that contributes to global warming. Destroying these forests simultaneously eliminates a natural carbon sink and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, worsening the global climate crisis.

Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
