Weekend Reading

Dear Friend,

Last week, hundreds of Israeli settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Turmus Ayya in the West Bank. One Palestinian was killed and at least 12 were injured. Homes, shops, and agricultural fields were destroyed. The U.S. must pressure Israel to stop violence against Palestinians. One immediate step it can take is to end all U.S. military aid to Israel. Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

At a New Jersey women’s group, survivors find healing and support: [link removed] Every month, a group of immigrant women gather at AFSC’s office in Newark. Most are survivors of domestic violence or other abuse. In this space, they find ways to support one another and resources to advocate for more just, humane migration policies for all, writes AFSC’s Guissela Galindo.

Do you want to learn restorative justice skills?: [link removed] Apply for AFSC’s limited-seat, co-learning cohort, which takes place online every other Wednesday from Sept. 6-Nov. 15. Participants will get instruction and practice in facilitating lower-level restorative justice circles. We'll also try to apply what we learn outside of sessions—whether in organizing work, our communities, or personal lives. Attendees are expected to attend all six sessions. Apply today. Us & Them: Who Gets Stuck Behind Bars In West Virginia?: [link removed] In West Virginia jails, more than half of people incarcerated have not been found guilty of a crime. They’re there because they can’t afford bail. They’re also disproportionately Black. This podcast episode explores racial disparities in the criminal legal system. It also features AFSC’s Kenny Matthews, who shares his personal experience with the system and his advocacy work to change it. (WV Public Radio)

The failures of Israel's blockade of Gaza, the longest siege of the 21st century: [link removed] The month of June marked the 16th anniversary of the blockade Israel imposed on Gaza. The impacts of the blockade have been devastating to the 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. It severely limits movement and access to water, electricity, and medical care. Yet the blockade has failed to crush Palestinian resistance, says AFSC’s Jennifer Bing. (New Arab)
