Tobacco Nation: A Call to Eliminate Geographic Smoking Disparities in the U.S. ([link removed])

Smoking prevalence for adults and young adults is 50% higher in a group of 12 Midwestern and Southern states compared to the rest of the country, according to Truth Initiative’s latest “Tobacco Nation” report. This report, the third since 2017, analyzes geographic disparities in tobacco use, discusses the obstacles that limit tobacco policy change in these states, and proposes solutions to reduce geographic disparity in tobacco use across the United States.

Why smoking remains higher in Tobacco Nation states ([link removed])

In Tobacco Nation, a group of 12 states where smoking prevalence is 50% higher among adults and young adults, people smoke 500 more cigarettes per year than adults and young adults in other states. A combination of factors has led to this disparity, including low taxes, industry interference, low government spending on tobacco prevention and cessation programs, and uneven implementation of local flavored tobacco policies. However, research shows that it is possible to create a future where these geographic inequities do not exist.

Q&A: LGBT pride in ending nicotine and tobacco use ([link removed])

Five truth activists gathered at the Capital Pride Festival in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, June 11 to engage attendees and expose the tobacco industry’s history of targeting the LGBT community. Decades of targeting marketing in the LGBT community has contributed to higher prevalence of tobacco use in the community, with research finding that prevalence of e-cigarette use increased among LGBT youth between 2020 and 2021. Truth Initiative spoke with three of the five youth activists gathered at the Capital Pride Festival: Kacey King, a truth activist from Georgia; Marc Hawk III, a truth Ambassador from Alabama; and Faria Tavacoli, a truth activist from Nevada.

Louisiana – Gov. John Bel Edwards signed into law a bill that will increase the excise tax on e-cigarettes from 5 cents per milliliter of nicotine solution to 15 cents and create a directory of all vape and alternative nicotine products authorized for sale in the state. Beginning November 1, only e-cigarette products that have submitted a premarket tobacco product application that either received a marketing order from the FDA, remains under review by the FDA, or received a no marketing order but the agency or a federal court has issued a stay order will be allowed to be sold.
