Internet Safety Month #InternetSafetyMonth “It never crossed our mind that it could be our son. We went back in and checked the history….and realized he’d been staying up all night at age 11 and he had visited more than 900 pornographic sites." Meet Renee. I met Renee many years ago when a friend introduced us and asked me to advise her regarding the unfolding tragedy upon learning of her 11-year-old son’s secret addiction to online pornography. We became fast friends as I was able to walk alongside her through what would be a long journey of healing and recovery for her son. She bravely shared her family’s story for the production of Enough Is Enough's Internet Safety 101 program a number of years ago. I know you will be truly inspired by her bravery in telling me her story including the shocking lengths her 11-year-old went to in his quest to access internet pornography which Renee had blocked, to the inspiring hope the family went through together to bring their beloved son into long-lasting healing and wholeness. I urge you to take a few minutes to view this powerful video as this brave, mother-turned-advocate shares details of her harrowing experience so that other parents will be better equipped to protect their own sons and daughters in the digital world. Did You Know... 75% of teenagers have viewed pornography by age 17 Average age of first exposure to pornography is age 12 41% of teenagers say they've seen images of nudity or sexual acts online during the school day (bypassing existing WiFi filtering) 58% say they came across the pornography by accident while browsing the internet or on social media More than half of those ages 13 to 17 viewed violent pornography (rape, choking, someone in pain) (Common Sense Media, 2022) Download Pornography 101 Quick Guide I am happy to share with you that Renee’s son is one of the fortunate ones. He is grown now and thankfully living a happy, healthy life in recovery. But there are many, many children who aren’t so lucky. Pornography can be devastating to our children, stealing their innocence and harming their emotional, mental and sexual development. To learn more, check out EIE’s Pornography 101 Quick Guide for details about its harmful impact, how to recognize the warning signs and how to prevent your child from viewing this toxic content. I know Renee and her family agree that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Help Enough Is Enough protect children! Renee and her story continue to inspire me and my team at EIE to strive to provide parents with life-changing tools. As we near the end of Internet Safety Month, please know that we are working year-round to address the ever-changing online dangers that children are facing.
