One year ago today, 6 ultraconservative justices on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating bodily autonomy for millions.

There’s no sugarcoating it: in the last year, Americans suffered an unprecedented loss of freedom. 100 days after the Dobbs v. Jackson decision came down, [20 million+]([link removed]) people no longer had access to abortion in their home state. In the past year, [almost half]([link removed]) of states have restricted access to abortion. And politicians like Ron DeSantis have used draconian, anti-abortion policies to score points with the far right.

But we didn't roll over and we didn't relent – we said "fuck bans" and "fuck that" and we fought back.

Together, we raised over $1.75 million to support the fight for reproductive freedom. That included more than $1.4 million for legal defense, independent clinics, and local abortion funds, and more than $300,000 for ballot initiative fights and grassroots organizing. We achieved historic victories in the midterms: many candidates who ran on pro-choice platforms won and millions of people in 6 different states voted on abortion-related ballot measures and came down decisively on the side of reproductive freedom. 6/6!

You probably already know that 2024 will be a biggie—every major GOP presidential candidate poses a threat to abortion rights nationwide. But you might not know that we have a couple major fights for freedom in 2023.

[THE STATE OF REPRO IN 2023]([link removed])

Republicans in Ohio have set a special election for August 8th to [raise the threshold]([link removed]) for citizens to pass a constitutional amendment. Why? They want to prevent voters from codifying abortion rights. That’s not speculation—the Secretary of State straight-up admitted that [this measure is “100%” about defeating a reproductive freedom amendment to the state Constitution that is expected to be on the November ballot]([link removed]).

Ohio’s heavily-gerrymandered state legislature set the issue for an August special in the hopes that voter turnout would be low and that folks wouldn’t pay attention. Our partners in the state think that voters will defeat the measure if they’re fully informed about the stakes. But that’s a big “if.”

Meanwhile, in Virginia, an extremist Republican governor [has said]([link removed]) he'd work to pass an abortion ban if Republicans take full control of the state legislature. Right now, a narrow Democratic majority in the state Senate has blocked new bans, but every seat in the legislature will be up for re-election in November. The margins are tight now—and they may get even tighter after this election.

So we’re raising money to reach as many voters as possible in Ohio and Virginia about the stakes of their elections in 2023, and we hope you’ll chip in.
