On June 24th, 2022 Roe v. Wade was overturned with the release of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. The decision corrected the Supreme Court’s error and returned the power to protect life back to the American people through their elected representatives at the state and federal level. Now, one year later to the day, here is the state of play.
Advancing the Cause of Life
The demise of Roe means that elected representatives at the state and federal level can now decide how to protect life and defend the unborn, and many states are now taking action.

There are currently over a dozen states <[link removed]> that protect women and unborn babies during all nine months of pregnancy. Additionally, over a dozen more states now provide strong pro-life protections.

We are saving lives! These laws are already bearing fruit as states with the strongest pro-life policies have seen abortions drop 96 percent. <[link removed]>

But the Democrats can not stand this and continue to push their radical agenda. Just this week Democrats have tried to pass a series of bills to force every state to allow abortion on demand up until birth.

Conservatives are going on offense in the states. It’s time for them to go on offense at the federal level too. Here are a few policies <[link removed]> Congress should enact. Congress should:


- Protect unborn children with beating hearts through the Heartbeat Protection Act.
- Protect unborn children who survive an attempted abortion.
- Protect babies from lethal discrimination i.e. abortions conducted based on whether a baby is expected to have Down syndrome.
- Limit the interstate flow of dangerous chemical abortion drugs.
- Stop all taxpayer funding of the abortion providers like Planned Parenthood
- Enshrine into law a private right of action for anyone who is compelled to violate their conscience by participating in or aiding an abortion.
Congress should also fight Biden’s politicization of the Department of Defense and National Defense Authorization Act through its pro-abortion policies.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin turned the Department of Defense (DoD) into an abortion travel agency by declaring in a memo last fall that it will fund paid time off and travel for service members to receive abortions. Unfortunately, when the House Armed Services Committee marked up the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) this week – legislation which authorizes policy for the DoD – it did not include important language to rescind Biden’s abortion travel memo.

The NDAA is now expected to move to the House Floor for consideration after the July 4th recess and offers another opportunity for Congress to do the right thing. Members in the House must protect the unborn and preserve the integrity of our national defense by offering and supporting an amendment on the Floor to overturn this attempt by the Biden administration to circumvent the law and facilitate taxpayer funded abortions.
Speaking Out on the Border
The demand for a secure border continues to grow, and Heritage Action Sentinels are taking the initiative to keep the issue alive. Just this week, two letters to the editor were written by Sentinels and published in local newspapers.

Sentinel Don Kirchoff of Texas wrote in the Wilson County News saying: <[link removed]>
“Amnesty forgives consequences for illegal immigration, undermines the rule of law, and fuels unlawful migration. Amnesty of any kind increases the incentives for illegal crossings and makes the task of border security much more difficult. Amnesty promotes civil unrest, impacts our security, and disrupts cultural cohesion.”

Kirchoff highlighted the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2) that the House passed and urged the Senate to pass it as well.

Sentinel Don Pearce of Texas echoed Kirchoff <[link removed]>. He wrote:
“The Secure the Border Act (HR 2) would actually address the crisis at our southern border because it provides the solution to fix the asylum system and to give Customs and Border Protection the right resources with better immigration enforcement. It also provides the resources to continue building the wall as a further deterrent to unauthorized immigrants. This is what we need!”

Kirchoff and Pearce’s letters to the editor (LTE) are examples of how grassroots and Sentinels can spread a conservative message in their local communities.

Grassroots can also get involved by calling Congress <[link removed]> and urging them to impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Mayorkas has overseen the largest humanitarian disaster that has ever occurred on our southern border. Over 6 million illegal immigrants have crossed into our nation from over 160 countries, including at least 1.2 million “got-aways” and 182+ individuals on the terror watch list.

There has been an unacceptable increase in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and sex trafficking across our open border. Congress must hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable for the consequences of his actions.
