Emergency Response to Ukraine Dam Collapse
Disaster struck on June 6, when the Kakhovka dam collapsed in southern Ukraine. Safe drinking water that once came from the reservoir is now in extremely short supply, dropping by 70 percent for the approximately 700,000 people who rely on it. Farmland and irrigation systems have been destroyed in the surrounding area. At least 13 towns and villages still remain under water. UNICEF teams sprung into action to deliver resources to families in need — including drinking water, hygiene kits and cash transfers — and have set up safe, nurturing centers for the thousands of newly displaced families with children.

These brilliant young leaders are turning eco-anxiety into eco-optimism, and despair into action.

Amid ongoing security threats, UNICEF has reached families with lifesaving interventions including vaccines, safe drinking water and Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food, as well as secure learning spaces and psychosocial support.
