Emergency Response to Ukraine Dam Collapse
Disaster struck on June 6, when the Kakhovka dam collapsed in southern Ukraine. Safe drinking water that once came from the reservoir is now in extremely short supply, dropping by 70 percent for the approximately 700,000 people who rely on it. Farmland and irrigation systems have been destroyed in the surrounding area. At least 13 towns and villages still remain under water. UNICEF teams sprung into action to deliver resources to families in need — including drinking water, hygiene kits and cash transfers — and have set up safe, nurturing centers for the thousands of newly displaced families with children.

An Update on the Crisis in Sudan
Since armed conflict broke out in Sudan in April, the number of children in dire need of humanitarian support has surged to over 13 million — and UNICEF is there to help. Families are facing unimaginable circumstances, as hospitals have been damaged or destroyed, schools have been shelled, food and water are in short supply and electricity is widely cut off. Amid ongoing security threats, UNICEF has reached families with lifesaving interventions including vaccines, safe drinking water and Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food, as well as secure learning spaces and psychosocial support.

Laurie Hernandez Becomes a UNICEF USA Ambassador
We’re thrilled to announce that Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez is the newest UNICEF USA Ambassador! After meeting with migrant children in Panama’s Darién province in May, Hernandez said: “Witnessing families with babies and small children arrive by boat after this frightening journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of UNICEF’s work on the ground … I will advocate for all children to help ensure an equitable future.”
