Early Notification case stories [[link removed]]

As part NHS Resolution’s maternity campaign 2022/25, we relaunched a number of case stories drawing on learning from our Early Notification scheme, to help support learning from harm identified through claims. This year, we’ve published two new case stories focusing on appropriate antenatal use of computerised cardiotocograph and the management of shoulder dystocia. Read more about the case stories [[link removed]].

Launch of maternity eLearning module [[link removed]]

Last week, we launched our first eLearning module. This free, innovative resource is designed to support clinicians working in maternity services. It focuses on learning from the significant avoidable harm that can occur during the antenatal and postnatal care of mothers and their babies and is seen in the cases notified to our Early Notification Scheme. Case of note: KC v. Dr. Edward Gaynor (High Court, 20 April 2023 – Judge Howells) [[link removed]]

In this case, the court considered whether a GP with a quarter century experience had been negligent in failing to refer a non-registered patient to hospital for further investigations, instead wrongly diagnosing a haematoma of the groin. The practitioner was acquitted, in what can be seen as a classic demonstration of the Bolam test in practice. Read more about this case [[link removed]].

NHS Resolution shares learning with international partners [[link removed]]

In the last two months, we have met with representatives from the Canadian Medical Protective Association and with a delegation from Singapore to share learning and insights across healthcare systems. Supporting National Thrombosis week [[link removed]]

We supported National Thrombosis Week 1-7 May through a joint blog with Thrombosis UK. Thrombosis is common, potentially deadly, and frequently has a life-long impact on individuals. In the last decade, we documented 687 closed claims on thrombosis. Our blog provides access to our thrombosis digital resource, identifying important actions that can prevent patient harm and future claims. Read our blog [[link removed]].
