DEAR MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS,
We are at a crucial moment in the fight for climate and environmental
justice. Wildfires raging in Canada are inundating a wide swath of the
United States with hazardous smoke and particulate matter — turning skies
orange where I live in New York, ocean temperatures are SPIKING TO
NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN HIGHS [3], and we are in the middle of what may be the
HOTTEST YEAR IN RECORDED HISTORY [4].
Frontline communities are bearing the brunt of these burdens. A RECENT
STUDY [5] revealed that up to half of humanity is at risk of being left
outside of ecosystems that can sustain life before the end of this century.
This means that billions will face the devastating consequences of extreme
heat, food scarcity, and increased mortality rates.

When President Biden presented his disastrous Dirty Debt Deal to Congress
in May, GGJ joined forces with 175 CLIMATE ORGANIZATIONS [6] to call for
the passage of a Clean Debt Ceiling in the House. OUR MEMBERS RALLIED FOR
THE SENATE TO REJECT THE TERRIBLE BILL [7] that ultimately greenlighted the
Mountain Valley Pipeline, ERODED ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS [8], and
targeted poor and working class folks with austerity measures.
Earlier this month, our Policy Director, Adrien Salazar, joined frontline
communities demanding real solutions at the United Nations Climate Change
meeting in Bonn, Germany. AMONG A DISTINGUISHED PANEL OF EXPERTS [9],
Adrien amplified the voices of members affected by climate crises and shed
light on the outsized role of the United States military in polluting
global emissions. Since 2001, the U.S. military has accounted for a
staggering 77 to 80 percent of the federal government's total energy
consumption.
We cannot stop climate chaos without demilitarization and redirecting
military funding toward measures that sustain life instead of causing death
and destruction. It’s also time for fossil fuel companies to provide
CLIMATE REPARATIONS [10] to the people they have harmed. Climate
reparations could redirect $170 TRILLION [11] back to frontline communities
worldwide, ensuring that those responsible for the climate crisis are held
accountable.

Nos encontramos en un momento crucial en la lucha por la justicia
climática y del medio ambiente. Los incendios forestales que azotan
Canadá están inundando una amplia franja de Estados Unidos con humo y

humanidad corre el riesgo de quedar fuera de ecosistemas capaces de

mortalidad.

NUESTROS MIEMBROS SE MOVILIZARON PARA QUE EL SENADO RECHAZARA EL TERRIBLE
PROYECTO DE LEY [7] que, en última instancia, daba luz verde al oleoducto
“Mountain Valley Pipeline”, EROSIONABA LAS PROTECCIONES
MEDIOAMBIENTALES [8] y afectaba a los pobres y a la clase trabajadora con
medidas de austeridad.
A principios de este mes, nuestro director de Política, Adrien Salazar, se
unió a las comunidades de primera línea que exigían soluciones reales en
la reunión de las Naciones Unidas sobre el cambio climático convocada en
