We need an economy that works for workers

** Good paying jobs are guaranteed in an economy that works for workers.

Policy. It's not the most fascinating part of elections and the average voter finds them boring. But there is one policy that has the support of Democratic, Republican, and independent voters over all other policies. It's a federal job guarantee.

What's that mean? It creates full employment by having the federal government promise to hire unemployed workers as an employer of last resort. In the current economy, the Federal Reserve reduces inflation by raising interest rates. What happens? Food, fuel, and housing get more expensive, and jobs are cut causing unemployment. A federal job guarantee allows for all workers to have a job.

For Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District, if there was a program in place it would do several things:
1. Bring more taxes into local communities to pay for roads and services that are desperately needed.
2. Eliminates unemployment. Everyone who wants to work gets a job!
3. Breathe new life into our towns and villages. The jobs needed are decided on the local level, so workers can help repair aging infrastructure, paint and maintain local buildings, and provide child care and support to elders.

I'm still getting out into the community to share that I'm running for Congress! On Saturday, I joined the St. Croix County Democrats in Hudson.
In my previous job, I would generate scenarios of the future to help businesses and organizations think about "what ifs". About five years ago, I put a guaranteed job program into a 10-year scenario to think through what that would mean for my company. It meant we would need to create even better and more meaningful work. Some folks thought such a program would never happen. In fact, it almost did. The writers of the Employment Act of 1946 had full employment as central to the law. It was changed at the last minute. Will a federal job guarantee work? With the right policy it will work. We should try to give the dignity of a job to everyone who needs one. The benefits outweigh the costs.

Let me know what you think of a federal job guarantee and how it might help your community. Always thankful,

Kyle Kilbourn
