[Global Plastics Treaty] [7]
Dear John,
Negotiations are underway to develop a GLOBAL AGREEMENT TO ADDRESS THE
PLASTIC POLLUTION CRISIS. WE NEED YOUR HELP [8] to continue advocating for
a strong and ambitious Global Plastics Treaty that will turn off the tap on
plastic production and create the systemic change we need TO STOP PLASTIC
POLLUTION—which French President Macron has called a “TIME BOMB FOR THE
WORLD”!
Our team has been working hard to UPLIFT THE VOICES OF OUR POWERFUL AND
EXPANSIVE ALLIANCE of organizations, businesses, and individuals during the
treaty negotiations.
SUPPORT OUR WORK [9]
Earlier this month, in Paris, France, the United Nations (UN) wrapped up
the second of five sessions of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee
(INC-2) [10], during which we:
* Submitted a statement to the UN and the U.S. government delegation from
27 Coalition Member Businesses [11] calling for a Global Plastics Treaty
that supports the many small businesses working to create innovative,
plastic-free products and systems
* Delivered a letter to the U.S. government signed by 37 allied
organizations [12] urging the nation’s leaders to take a stronger stance
in the negotiations
* Published a _New York Times_ Letter to the Editor [13] pushing back on
false solutions and harmful narratives and emphasized the need to turn off
the tap on plastic production
* Helped spread the word in the media [14] about the Break Free From
Plastic movement, the myth of plastic “recycling,” and the importance
of an ambitious Global Plastics Treaty with a strong focus on reduction and
reuse
* Supported attendance of two climate justice-focused allies at INC-2 in
Paris
WE WILL KEEP WORKING TO ENSURE THAT KEY VOICES ARE HEARD AND REPRESENTED at
the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations. With INC-3 set to take place in
Nairobi, Kenya, this November, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW [15] to make the
most of what Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme
Inger Andersen has called “A ONCE-IN-A-PLANET OPPORTUNITY.” This is a
critical moment TO CREATE A MORE JUST, EQUITABLE WORLD FREE OF PLASTIC
POLLUTION AND ITS TOXIC IMPACTS.
Onwards with gratitude,
